Emotional Fitness events

for sports teams

Fitness in sport is about more than just physical skills and mental attitude. It is also about Emotional Fitness. The emotionally healthy sports person:

* Knows himself/herself and expresses feelings appropriately.

* Encourages and supports others in achieving their goals.

* Works effectively as a vital and valued part of the team.

These Emotional Fitness events, organised by Brook Creative Therapy, combine bodywork, transactional analysis and play therapy techniques. They provide a largely nonverbal – and fun – way of understanding and expressing emotions.

Welcoming, Encouraging, Uniting

This three-day action-packed event helps sports team members to understand their own needs, appreciate others and work as a team.

Day One focuses on personal needs: feeling welcomed and appreciated, handling difficult emotions, and understanding the link between emotional fitness and a healthy body.

Day Two emphasises the importance of relating well: encouraging each other, giving priority to others’ needs, being available when someone feels lonely or discouraged.

Day Three is about working as a team: flowing together in a united cause (hopefully to win!), recognising the importance of each person in the team, celebrating success together even when things are difficult.

The event is packed with plenty of fun activities, games and team challenges. It also provides opportunities for team members to deal with outstanding emotional issues in an atmosphere that is confidential, safe and supportive.

Event leaders

Emotional Fitness events are led by Roger & Christine Day.

Roger Day is an experienced trainer, a registered psychotherapist and a certified play therapist. He has had a lifelong interest in the countryside and commitment to wilderness experiences. He took up judo as a mature adult and assisted young people in learning the sport. Christine Day is a European recognised adult trainer with a diploma in counselling. She specialises in creative approaches to training and has developed numerous activities that enhance understanding of the emotions.

General information

Brook Creative Therapy’s Emotional Fitness events are designed to help and support all members of a sports team. It is important therefore that each team member attends for the full duration of the event. In some cases coaches, fitness trainers and substitutes may want to be involved, provided the team is happy with this. If this is agreed, the maximum number attending any event is strictly limited to 24 delegates.

Emotional Fitness events can take place indoors or outdoors. Best results are achieved by a combination of the two, preferably in a forest or mountain area away from the public. A residential setting away from the stress of everyday life can contribute to effective teambuilding. Participants need to be excused extra activities during the event so they can gain the maximum from Emotional Fitness.

Creative therapy training

Academic year 2010-11

Creative, practical skills for counsellors and therapists working with adults and children. Each day can count as 6 hours’ CPD. Monthly training takes place in Rugby, Warwickshire, on a Friday and Saturday.

10-11 September 2010

Friday: Confidence & self-esteem

Low self-esteem is the biggest symptom of emotional problems. Helping clients to build a positive, healthy self-image through activities will go a long way to helping them resolve their other difficulties.

Saturday: Sandplay therapy

This day provides a basic introduction to sandtray techniques, including the kinds of objects to use. Discover the power of this method for yourself, then use this silent therapy in your therapeutic work.

8-9 October 2010

Friday:Abuse & abandonment issues

Childhood abuse is often at the source of many difficulties. Half the day will be spent learning practical ways to help clients in this area. The other half day is devoted to understanding the emotions related to abandonment.

Saturday: Anger expression & violence management

Clients build up anger inside themselves. Many express that anger in inappropriate ways. This workshop provides tools for helping clients with anger problems to release anger in ways that are safe and even fun.

12-13 November 2010

Friday: Art and drawing

As children we instinctively use art to express ourselves. This natural ability can be used in therapy to help clients deal with their emotional issues. This workshop enables you to learn techniques in art and drawing to benefit clients.

Saturday: Music in therapy 1

This workshop introduces music in play therapy. Learn many rhythm and musical activities to use with clients. Bring your voice and sense of rhythm (also musical instruments if you can play them).

14-15 January 2011

Friday: Creative visualisation & stories

Imaginary stories and guided visualisation can be used in therapy to help clients solve their difficulties. This practical workshop will give you techniques in using these skills in creative ways with your clients.

Saturday: Empathy and intuition

In this workshop you will learn nonverbal and intuitive ways of communicating and contracting with clients in therapy. These and other techniques can help you towards vital empathy and ‘contact in relationship’.

4-5 February 2011

Friday: Drama and masks

This workshop will provide you with a basic understanding in using drama and masks in therapy. You will learn practical skills using masks and drama to work effectively with children and adult clients.

Saturday: Movement & therapeutic expression

Most people naturally enjoy rhythm and movement. In therapy we can help clients to enjoy using this natural ability to help solve their problems. Movement and therapeutic expression is about clients learning to respond in a healthy way.

4-5 March 2011

Friday: Encouraging, celebrating, achieving

This workshop will help you find and appreciate the qualities of even the most difficult clients. Learn to celebrate their successes and achievements in therapy using genuine care, acceptance and even love.

Saturday: Emotional literacy

In this event you will discover the importance and place of understanding your own emotions and those of others (‘emotional literacy’). You can then help clients to become emotionally literate.

8-9 April 2011

Friday: Body expression

Clients with emotional problems do not appreciate their bodies, use negative language and deny their strength. This workshop will help you understand clients and give you practical ways to enable them to explore body expression.

Saturday: Music in therapy 2

The day will introduce new practical skills in using music in therapy. You will learn how to produce your own therapeutic musical activities based on your cultural background and that of the clients you work with.

13-14 May 2011

Friday: Effective communication

This workshop introduces skills needed to work with clients who have communication difficulties. There are plenty of creative ideas, including structure, repetition and client-led activities.

Saturday: Using the senses

In this workshop you will discover the delights of all your senses. You will  learn practical ways to use senses with your clients, including children on the autistic spectrum and other clients with sensory difficulties.

10-11 June 2011

Friday: Small world objects

Small world objects are useful when you have to travel or have a tiny space to work in and want to use creative materials. They are effective for helping clients in hospital or who are terminally ill to express themselves in therapy.

Saturday: Therapeutic adventure outdoors

Creative therapy does not have to be confined to a building. Learn exciting skills that any therapist can use in the garden, park or mountains to help people deal with their emotional problems.

8-9 July 2011

Friday: Creative groupwork

In addition to individual work, creative therapy is also highly effective in groups. This workshop will give you creative ideas for general and specialist group activities that help clients together to deal with their difficulties.

Saturday: Sandplay therapy 2

This workshop is a very active workshop providing a deeper look into sandtray work, including understanding what is being shown by the client. The techniques are different from those in the Sandtray 1 workshop making this a stand-alone workshop.
